What\ncould be better than helping people maximise their potential and create their\nbest selves? But in this noisy, fractured marketplace \u2013 where do you start? And\nhow do you build your business?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/healthylivinglondon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fitnessbusiness.jpg\" alt=\"Start your own fitness business - yoga pose\" class=\"wp-image-9637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthylivinglondon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fitnessbusiness.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/healthylivinglondon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fitnessbusiness-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/healthylivinglondon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fitnessbusiness-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve worked with a range of fitness brands from studio owners, designers, clothing ranges and app developers, so have put together some thoughts to consider\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Write up your Hopes &amp; Dreams<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a moment\u2026 You are launching a new venture, with\nall the excitement and activity that entails, but sit down somewhere quiet to\nthink deeply about your hopes and dreams for your future. For you personally\nand professionally, for your business, for your family. List five or six. Write\nthem down somewhere safe that you can refer back to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These hopes and dreams will form the horizon point for\nwhere you are aiming with your business. They provide the guiding star to plot\nthe route, helping you focus on the right direction when you get pulled off\ncourse. They are the place you want your business to take you to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Understand your difference<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this business, people buy people. Think of all the\nclasses you attended, who inspired you the most, got max effort from you, made\nyou achieve the impossible? What was it they had?&nbsp; A confidence, a belief in you, an ability to\nteach you what they loved. Now think yourself there\u2026 it is <strong>your<\/strong> difference, skills and passion that will help you grow\nyour business. But first you need to map these to form the basis of your\noffer.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at your background in detail, write it up large\non paper mounted on the wall. Look at your past \u2013 what have you been paid to\ndo, what clients have you worked for? And what are your passions, skills and\ntalents?&nbsp; All of this has gone into\ncreating you, who you are and the personal resources you can call on to take\nyour business forward. It is a unique trajectory to here that no-one can match.\nUse it to form the basis of your business. You can see how to draw this up in\nthe first section of my book <em>Simple Tips,\nSmart Ideas: Build a Bigger Better Business<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Study the Fitness Market<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many different types of health, wellbeing\nand fitness businesses \u2013 from the tiny to the very large. Where do you want to\nposition yourself? Are you looking to work with the developed active well\nsector, or do you want to go for growth with the medical\/fitness interface that\nhas huge potential?&nbsp; Or perhaps a bit of\nboth? Look at the current market, as well as trends. Read everything to see\nwhere there is momentum. What part of this world appeals to you and offers opportunities\nfor your venture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Side-hustle, freelance or studio owner? <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the next questions you need to consider is how\nyou intend to work with your clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many new entrants to the fitness industry start with a\nside-hustle to their day-job. This gives them flexibility, an extra interest as\nwell as extra cash, but means they are not reliant on it as their sole income.\nAnd many stay working like this for years, which is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to enter this world is to offer classes or\ntreatments within an existing studio. They carry the costs of the building\noverheads, marketing etc whilst you come in to teach your classes. This can\nallow you to build your audience but also means you are bound by the studio\u2019s\nrules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also build your freelance business without a\nstudio, teaching outside, in playgrounds, offices, homes. This takes time to\nbuild but can be a great next step from a side-hustle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then you can consider launching your own studio.\nThis gives you lots of freedom to shape your own offer, but also\nresponsibilities too. Not only are you running a teaching programme but a whole\nbusiness. Perhaps this is a step to consider once you have grown your audience\nand have a breadth of experience behind you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Face-to-face or remote?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The huge growth of online fitness and wellbeing apps\nand programmes means that a fitness business doesn\u2019t have to be standing in\nfront of a class, or even working with a client one-to-one in person. With\nsocial media and digital delivery, you can create and build your business from\nyour desktop in interesting and different ways. Or use these tools to add to\nthe in-person physical business you have already started.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teaching a class or individual is a hyper local\nbusiness as it needs you to be in the room together, but think about what you\ncould offer regionally, or at national level. By adding digital coaching you\ncan build your business internationally \u2013 finding clients across continents\nthat you couldn\u2019t reach in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Add new revenue streams to build resilience in your business<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are launching your business you need to focus\non one or two prime revenue streams. These are likely to include selling your\ntime in a class or through one-to-one teaching. But being reliant on only one\nbusiness model is dangerous. If you fall ill or injure yourself, you may lose\nyour income. Burn-out and stress-related ailments are common in the fitness\nindustry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you start off, do consider additional ways of\nearning revenues that you could build once your venture is underway.&nbsp; Could you sell your knowledge through\nteaching, running industry events, by devising workshops for local doctors\u2019\nsurgeries? There are countless inventive ideas and ways of thinking about this\nin my book to spur you on \u2013 with all sorts of revenue model suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Five areas of opportunity<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When new businesses are being launched, I always\nencourage them to keep an eye open for potential new ways of working with these\nfive areas of opportunity\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Past\/present clients : <\/strong> what else could you offer these people who\u2019ve already worked or are working with you? Is there something you could add to their experience that is new, fresh and encourages them to spend more with you?<\/li><li><strong>Future clients :&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;with these you can structure your charging and offer differently as they will accept it as normal, for example you could bring in new packages, add value in some way to charge higher fees.<\/li><li><strong>Competitors :<\/strong> this area is often overlooked but by offering a service or product to your own industry, you can find new revenue streams and ways of building your business others may not have spotted.<\/li><li><strong>New Buyers :&nbsp;<\/strong>in this dynamic market, can you identify new ways of engaging with companies entering it for the first time if they fit with your plan ahead?<\/li><li><strong>New Audiences :<\/strong>&nbsp;I always look outside the window to ask \u2018what could I sell to the wo\/man walking past?\u2019.
